Private group supporting education challenges itself, community

The Andover Coalition for Education, the private group that played a key role in creating a new foreign language lab at Andover High and engineering labs at all three of Andover's middle schools, is taking on a new fund-raising challenge.

President Tina Girdwood said ACE's primary focus next year will be "the ACE 500 Challenge" - an effort to nearly double the number of people who have given money to the ACE effort so far.

ACE donation, grant pay for addition to AHS curriculum

Teacher Christopher Krueger stands in front of his Spanish 5 class, rattling off instructions in rapid Spanish. Students, each sitting in front of a computer screen, put on pairs of headphones. A buzz of conversation, en espanol, fills the room.

So begins a lesson using Andover High School's new foreign language lab, installed this spring and funded entirely by donations. The volunteer and nonprofit Andover Coalition for Education combined money from its fundraising efforts with a grant from the Horne Family Foundation to cover the lab's $128,000 price tag.

ACE, grant provided money

Andover High School's new privately-funded language lab is in the process of coming online and was scheduled to be toured by residents at an open house on Wednesday, March 31.

Wiring and computers have been installed, but the lab's high-tech equipment won't be online until the end of the week, said Ellen Gaudiano, AHS Spanish teacher and lead foreign language teacher.

Once fully operational, students will use computers and state-of-the-art audio equipment to interact with multimedia-based lessons from around the world, said AHS Spanish teacher Chris Krueger.
