Oct 16, 2014 Andover Townsman: Make way for the scarecrows; Straw men to invade downtown for Andover Coalition for Education festival

The spooky season has arrived and downtown Andover has the mood well covered.

Starting this Saturday, 80 scarecrows will be taking up residence along Main Street. The straw creations designed and crafted by local schoolchildren and other community groups will decorate the light and electric poles as part of the second annual Scarecrow Festival.

July 10, 2014 Andover Townsman: A boost for ACE: Andover mother to promote, raise funds for education group

School may be out, but that doesn't mean the Andover Coalition for Education isn't still in session.

ACE, which aims to support curricula-enhancing initiatives across the Andover Public School system, has hired an Andover mother with two children in the local schools as its first part-time director.

Jennifer Srivastava is being charged with developing community awareness of the organization and raising money to support its work.

April 24, 2014 Andover Townsman: School Dance - Civil War Style

Arts program ends in rousing period fashion

A Civil War arts program came to a spirited end last weet at High Plain Elementary School with an old-fashioned barn dance.

Fifth-graders grabbed their partners and spun around the gym demonstrating a variety of barn dances from the era to culminate the Civil War arts dance residency at the school.

The program was funded by grants from the Andover Coalition for Education and Massachusetts Cultural Council.

March 6, 2014 Andover Townsman: A final tribute for education champion 

James receives 'Make A Difference' award before his death.

Ardent school supporter and Andover Coalition for Education co-founder Anthony “Tony” James passed away last week after a long battle with cancer, but not before receiving the Service Club of Andover’s “Make A Difference” award in honor of his contributions to the local schools.

James, 72, served two terms on the School Committee up to 2009. During that time, he teamed up with then-member Art Barber to create the Andover-based educational foundation ACE, paving the way for continued financial support of the town’s schools, according to Tina Girdwood, an ACE board member.

March 6, 2014 Andover Townsman: Andover Coalition for Education Eying first paid position

The Andover Coalition for Education is looking to take its work to the next level, and the organization’s board of directors is actively recruiting its first, paid executive director to help it do that.

The nonprofit organization dedicated to its financial support of the Andover School District is advertising for a part-time director.

Board members are so committed to the position that they have put up their own money to fund it. Eventually, they expect the position will pay for itself through grants.
